Workshops and Incursions for all ages!

I just wanted to thank you for the fabulous workshops!!!
I have had dance incursions before but yours was brilliant because as well as having amazing creative talents as performers you are effective teachers of your craft.

Kellie Brophy, Rolestone Community College, Perth Western Australia

Incursions and workshops are highly beneficial for cross curriculum subjects:

* LOTE - Indonesian Language or Asia Literacy in the classroom
* Music - body percussion/ensemble skills
* Drama - students learn about a form of traditional theatre from West Sumatra
* Dance - the diversity of Indonesia is seen through the different dances throughout the show
* Geography - Indonesia, our closest neighbour
* History - we talk about close ties between Yolngu (East Arnhem Land) and Macassan traders before European settlement in Australia.

  • PERFORMANCE-WORKSHOP
  • FOCUS-WORKSHOP

THE PERFORMANCE-WORKSHOP
The performers take participants on a spectacular and highly-engaging cultural journey.
Indonesia's diverse archipelago is explored; including dances from Sumatra, Bali and East & West Java.
These include; Tari Melayu from Riau, Tari Bajidor Kahot from West Java, Tari Betawi from Jakarta,
Tari Kreasi Baru (new choreography dances) from Java and Tari Topeng (mask dance).
Teachers are encouraged to learn these dances with the students and incorporate them in class.

The sessions consist of 25mins performance of the various dances from around Indonesia, followed by 35mins interactive workshop, where all the students are involved, not only do they learn movements from the dances, but have the opportunity to shine through their own performance.
The interactive part consists of;

Ratoh Duek sitting body percussion dances from Aceh. These dances encompass intricate pattern making with your hands accompanied by traditional devotional songs. Rhythms are made through clapping, hitting the upper body, legs and voice. The movements are communal, fun and rhythmically satisfying. These dances have become popular in Jakarta and overseas. Individuals feel like they belong within a group and through shared action the group feels like a community, creating self-esteem and confidence. Teachers are encouraged to learn these dances with the students and incorporate them in class.

Randai- a form of traditional theatre from West Sumatra using Galembong pants where a fusion of rhythm and sound is created by hitting the big pants, a particular favourite with all ages. Students will also take turns in wearing the galembong pants for Randai, creating rhythmic patterns together and learning basic pencak silat (martial arts) from West Sumatra.
